Sometime in the late 70's/early 80's, I picked up a book called Lucifers Hammer. It was a collaboration by two authors I had never read before, Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. The team up was great. I looked for other books by this team and found The Mote in God's Eye, a truly fantastic novel. From there I discovered the Jannissaries, Falkenberg's Legion, and the CoDominium.
